e-Governance Ideas Hunt Awards Ceremony

The e-Governance Ideas Hunt was launched by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to solicit ideas from the civil society on using IT for better governance across Punjab. The competition gave citizens an opportunity to play an important part in changing the way public-sector services operate in the province. They were asked to choose one department of the government, identify a problem in its existing functionality and propose a viable solution to resolve the issue. Within a span of just one week hundreds of dynamic and transformative ideas were received with the majority focusing on areas of Higher Education, Community Development, Energy and Health.

The proposals were put before an eminent panel of   judges which included Dr. Sarmad Hussain (Professor, KICS-UET), Dr. Shafay Shamail (Vice Provost and Associate Professor, LUMS) and Jehan Ara (President, P@SHA). Given the overwhelming response and high quality of the ideas sent in, two winners were selected. The final decision was based on the importance of the problem highlighted, originality of the suggested solution and the presentation made before a panel of experts. The winners included: Asima Sadia, for her idea of making it obligatory for doctors to use an Electronic Health Record for making patient information accessible to healthcare professionals anywhere at any time and Ali Gibran for his idea of making a Learning Management System that trains and monitors over 300,000 teachers in Punjab for better instruction delivery and evaluation.  Both contestants received an i3 laptop, sponsored by Wateen Telecom. Prizes and certificates were also distributed amongst contestants who received honorable mention for their submissions to the competition.

The ceremony took place on Monday, May 14, 2012 at the Arfa Software Technology Park. Mr. Anwar Khan, Head of Consumer Sales at Wateen and Mr. Aamir Chaudhry, DG-IT at PITB were in attendance.
